The rule of three in garden design
One plant reads as an object, two as a pair, three as a group. Why odd numbers work, and when they stop being useful.

It is not a law — odd-numbered groups are simply useful because they create repetition without immediately becoming symmetrical.

That is the basic idea behind the “rule of three” in garden design.
It is not a law, and gardens do not need to be filled with groups of exactly three plants. But odd-numbered groups are useful because they create repetition without immediately becoming symmetrical.
Why three plants work so well
Imagine three identical perennials.
Placed in a row, they still feel fairly formal:
Move one plant forward and the relationship changes:
Now the eye reads the three plants as one composition.
There is a center of gravity, but no obvious middle plant. The arrangement feels balanced without being perfectly symmetrical.
That slight imbalance is often what makes an informal garden feel natural.
One plant, three plants, or a mass?
Different quantities create different effects.
One plant
Use one when the plant deserves to stand alone.
Good candidates include:
- A small ornamental tree
- A large architectural grass
- A specimen shrub
- A dramatic perennial
- A plant with a particularly distinctive shape

Three plants
Use three when you want the eye to perceive a recognizable group while still seeing individual plants.
Three is especially useful for:
- Medium-sized perennials
- Small shrubs
- Ornamental grasses
- Repeated accents
- Small planting beds
Five, seven, or more
As groups become larger, the individual plants begin to disappear into a mass or drift.
That can be desirable.
Five salvia plants may read as one purple shape rather than five separate objects. Seven grasses may create a broad sweep through the bed.

Arrange three plants as a triangle
The most useful three-plant arrangement is a loose triangle.
Avoid making the triangle perfectly equilateral.
Instead:
- Move one plant slightly forward
- Stretch one side
- Rotate the group to follow the bed
- Adjust spacing according to mature plant size

Use three at different scales
The rule can also apply to groups rather than individual plants.
You might have:
- Three hydrangeas forming one large group
- Three groups of salvia repeated through the bed
- Three major planting masses across an entire front yard
The repetition does not need to happen at only one level.
This creates rhythm across a larger design.
Three does not mean three of everything
A garden containing:
- 3 hydrangeas
- 3 grasses
- 3 salvias
- 3 coneflowers
- 3 catmint
- 3 sedges
can become just as formulaic as a garden planted in rows.
Use the rule as a way to establish relationships, not as a shopping formula.
Some plants should appear once. Others may appear five, seven, ten, or twenty times.
The goal is to create recognizable groups and repeated ideas.
When even numbers work better
Even numbers are not wrong.
They can be useful when:
- Flanking an entrance symmetrically
- Creating a hedge
- Repeating plants along a formal path
- Filling a rectangular planter
- Creating a deliberate pair
Two matching shrubs on either side of a front door may look exactly right.
The question is whether the symmetry is intentional.
A simple rule to remember
When placing a plant, ask:
Is this supposed to be a specimen, a group, or a mass?
If it is a specimen, one may be enough.
If it is a group, start with three.
If it is a mass, think bigger.
