How to plant in groups and drifts
The difference between a collection of plants and a designed garden is mass — areas where several plants are perceived together.

One of the biggest differences between a collection of plants and a designed garden is mass.
A mass is simply an area where several plants are perceived together.
Instead of seeing five individual salvias, you see a patch of purple. Instead of seven individual grasses, you see one flowing shape.
Groups and drifts are how you create those larger visual forms.
What is a planting group?
A group is a small collection of plants that clearly belong together.
Three hydrangeas may form a group. Five grasses may form another.
A group usually has a recognizable boundary, even if that boundary is irregular.
Groups are useful when you want individual plants to remain somewhat visible.
What is a drift?
A drift is a larger or more elongated mass that moves through the planting.
Think of a river rather than a dot.
A drift may contain:
- Five plants
- Seven plants
- Fifteen plants
- Several overlapping groups of the same species
The exact number matters less than the visual effect.
A successful drift draws the eye through the garden.
Why individual plants often look random
Suppose you have five varieties, one of each:
Each plant asks for separate attention.
Now repeat some of them:
The eye begins to recognize larger shapes.
Repetition reduces visual noise.
This is why using fewer varieties in greater quantities often makes a garden feel more sophisticated.
Build groups from triangles
For three plants, begin with a triangle.
For five plants, add another overlapping triangle.
For larger groups, continue extending the shape.

This makes the group feel cohesive without making the individual positions obvious.
Make drifts wider in some places
A drift should not necessarily maintain the same width from beginning to end.
Instead, allow it to:
- Widen around a focal point
- Narrow between shrubs
- Disappear behind another planting
- Reappear farther along the bed
- Break into smaller groups
That variation makes the planting feel integrated with the space.
Repeat a drift instead of stretching it forever
One enormous stripe of the same plant can feel just as artificial as a row.
It can be more effective to let a species appear, disappear, and return.
For example:
- Five catmint near the front entry
- Three more farther down the bed
- Another five near the corner
The gaps create rhythm.
Your eye remembers the plant and connects the groups.
Mix plants without creating confetti
Naturalistic planting does not mean every plant should be mixed evenly with every other plant.
A combination like this usually looks more artificial than natural:
Instead, use pockets:
Allow each plant to create moments of concentration.
Then let the groups overlap.
Consider how the plant grows
Some plants naturally form convincing masses. Others have strong individual forms.
Good drift plants often:
- Have relatively consistent habits
- Spread or mound naturally
- Look good when repeated
- Provide strong foliage or flower color
Highly architectural plants may work better as occasional accents within or around the drift.
Use drifts to direct the eye
A planting bed has movement even though nothing physically moves.
The eye follows repeated forms.
A drift can:
- Lead toward the front door
- Pull the eye around a corner
- Connect two larger shrubs
- Follow the edge of a path
- Carry a color through a long bed
That makes planting arrangement part of the overall composition of the property.
Groups create structure before plants mature
There is another benefit to grouping plants: young landscapes look more intentional.
Three small plants placed near one another already communicate an idea.
Three small plants spaced evenly across twelve feet of mulch look isolated.
Grouping does not eliminate the waiting period while plants mature, but it makes the plan easier to read from the beginning — which is much of the argument in how to make a flower bed look full without overplanting.
