How to arrange plants using triangles

Straight rows are easy to create and surprisingly hard to hide. Triangles are the underlying structure that replaces them — and the basis of 3:2, 4:1 and 5:3 groups.

Straight rows are easy to create and surprisingly hard to hide.

Triangles offer a simple alternative.

When three plants are placed at the corners of an imaginary triangle, they begin to read as a group instead of a row. Larger arrangements can then be built by overlapping several triangles.

The triangle should not be visible in the finished garden. It is simply the underlying structure.

Start with mature plant size

Before arranging anything, draw each plant at its expected mature width.

A plant expected to reach three feet across should be treated as roughly a three-foot circle in the plan.

The spacing between plants is measured from center to center — see how far apart should plants be.

This matters because the same triangular arrangement can look completely different depending on plant size.

The three-plant close triangle

A close triangle is useful when you want three plants to eventually read as one mass.

The mature canopies may touch or overlap slightly.

This works particularly well for:

  • Flowering perennials
  • Groundcovers
  • Compact shrubs
  • Ornamental grasses
  • Plants used as a repeated visual mass

Avoid making all three sides exactly equal. Slightly stretching or compressing one side makes the arrangement feel less mechanical.

The three-plant open triangle

An open triangle preserves more space between the plants.

This works better for:

  • Large shrubs
  • Architectural plants
  • Specimen grasses
  • Plants with broad branching habits
  • Compositions where negative space is intentional

The plants remain visually related, but each retains more of its individual form.

The 3:2 arrangement

A 3:2 arrangement combines three plants of one variety with two of another.

Begin with the three primary plants as a loose triangle.

Then place the two companion plants so they extend or interlock with that structure.

Avoid placing the companion plants symmetrically on opposite sides.

One may sit deeper into the group while the other extends toward an edge.

A 3:2 arrangement works well when the two plants have similar visual importance but one needs slightly more repetition.

For example:

  • Three grasses with two flowering perennials
  • Three compact shrubs with two contrasting grasses
  • Three salvias with two coneflowers

The 4:1 arrangement

A 4:1 arrangement uses four repeated plants to support one accent.

The four primary plants can be thought of as two overlapping triangles.

The single contrasting plant should usually sit somewhat off-center rather than directly in the middle.

This works particularly well when the accent plant is:

  • Taller
  • Darker
  • More architectural
  • More floriferous
  • Evergreen among seasonal plants

The four repeated plants create the mass. The fifth plant gives the eye somewhere to land — the mechanism behind creating a focal point.

The 5:3 arrangement

With eight total plants, a 5:3 arrangement begins to behave more like a drift.

Place the five primary plants as an irregular series of overlapping triangles.

Then weave three companion plants through or beside them.

Avoid alternating mechanically:

Instead, allow some plants of the same type to sit near one another.

The goal is interlocking repetition, not a checkerboard.

Rotate the arrangement to fit the bed

The same planting group can look completely different when rotated.

In a foundation bed, taller plants may need to sit farther from the viewer.

Along a curved edge, the longest axis of the group may follow the curve.

In an island bed, the arrangement should work from several directions.

Think of the triangle as flexible geometry, not a fixed diagram.

Repeat the idea, not the exact coordinates

If a three-plant triangle works once, you can repeat it elsewhere.

But rotate it. Stretch it. Use five plants instead of three. Allow one plant to connect two groups.

Repeating the same geometry perfectly can create a pattern that feels stamped onto the landscape.

Repeated plants create rhythm. Repeated coordinates create a grid. There is more on this in repetition and rhythm.

The triangle is a design tool, not a rule

You should not be able to walk through the finished garden identifying triangles everywhere.

The structure exists to help you avoid:

  • Rows
  • Equal spacing
  • Random scattering
  • Isolated plants
  • Unintentional symmetry

Once the planting feels coherent, the geometry can disappear.
